Gear Review: Portable Wifi Device by GlocalMe

I recently went on a trip to Utah, a long way home from New York. It’s been a long time since I left New York State – nearly 3 years due to the pandemic putting the world on hold, and it felt strange to travel long distances again. This trip was a friendship trip – I left my family at home for these adventures so that I could spend some quality time with my best friend who just moved to Salt Lake City. It was a 7 day trip, which was a long time to be away from my family. It was also a long time to be away from work and my various work obligations. I knew that in order for it to be a successful trip, I would need to stay connected to everything important back home.

I came across the Numen Air, a portable 5G WiFi hotspot device from Glocal Me, in my research and preparations. I had been looking for the best way to have internet access on my travels and I knew that a WiFi hotspot was the way to go. I needed something easy and convenient and that didn’t take up too much room in my suitcase since I was only bringing a carry-on for the flight. I also wanted to get something that I could use for future trips, without paying a monthly fee to sign up.

I found the Numen Air to be easy to use while riding in the car, while at my hotel or AirBNB, at the airport, and even at the trailhead. It’s a great internet device to use for an adventure lifestyle!

Set Up:
I set up the Numen Air device before I left on my trip, and it was super easy to set up. I was signed up and connected in under 10 minutes. All I needed to do was download an app on my phone which allowed me to manage the device, purchase data packages, or enable a “pay as you go” option. There is also a touch screen on the device that allows you to do some device management directly from it.

Once on the road, it was just as easy to use. I simply turned it on and both my phone and my laptop found the WiFi network right away and I was able to connect to it instantly. It uses Cloud SIM technology so it doesn’t require a SIM card to use so it was less of a hassle to get it set up.

Size:
I appreciated how portable the device was – it’s about the size and thickness of a cell phone, and I was able to store it in the front pocket of my laptop case without creating extra bulk. It would be easy to keep in a purse, pocket, or backpack as well. I appreciated the size of it – it was big enough that I wasn’t afraid of losing it, but it was small enough that it didn’t take up too much extra room in my suitcase. The goal was to only bring a carry-on for the flight so I was trying really hard to pack light. The size of this device was perfect for that.

Connectivity:
I used the device in the USA, but it can be used in over 140 countries without needing a SIM card, and it will save you on roaming charges. You can connect multiple devices to it at once – up to 16! It’s a 5G device which is the highest speed WiFi device you can get. I used it for both my phone and my laptop at the same time. I was able to load and scroll through Instagram which is very resource intensive. I could easily check my email, do some trail research on various websites prior to heading out, and I could video chat with my family each night.

Cost:
There is an upfront cost for the device itself, but is easily paid for on just one overseas trip by not having a ton of roaming charges on your phone. Once you have the device, it can be used for future trips simply by adding however much data you want to use. You can purchase various sized data packages, or you can pay-as-you-go, but there are no monthly charges! So even if you won’t travel again for another few months, it’s worth it to pick up this device.
